Flowkooler high flow pump #1622 for Pontiacs with the 8 bolt pattern has significant design improvements to achieve higher flow rates for improved cooling. Taller vanes bring the shrouding closer to the mating plate surface and additional precision machined vanes with a thinner wall provided a greater volume to the impeller's eye. The incremental vanes are balanced and carve up the workload to conserve horsepower all while achieving greater flow rates, higher head pressure and a more efficient flow. The impeller's color is due to Type II Class II military grade surface coating which protects against corrosive fluids.
FlowKooler introduced the first hi flow pumps and continues to improve impeller design. Why is increased flow so important to cooling a hot Pontiac engine? Because it has been proven time and time again that reducing the cycle time between the heat source and the heat sink creates more opportunities to shed heat and drop engine temperatures.
A Note on plates and gaskets:
The 8 bolt water pump used prior to 1968 has two steel plates in the timing cover behind the water pump. The center hole draws the fluid in and the plates route the flow to the left and right side of the engine.
1968 used a single divider plate and also had two additional rubber gaskets/rings that slide into the holes and assist in sealing and aligning the divider plate. Absent rubber gaskets the two divider plates may float inside the timing cover and some people have report a "rattle" sound. A work around proposed online suggests using a "dab" of RTV" to mitigate sound.
