More than one temperature in your engine? You're in good company.
Got a call from a poor guy who was chasing his tail. He had a 245 degree cylinder head and a 185 degree manifold. His top radiator hose was 190 degrees and the bottom was 178 degrees. He wondered what to make of it.
Our answer; perhaps nothing.
We collected data from a research paper that pondered the same question. Here is what they found.
Location | Celcius | Farenheit |
Intake manifold | 60 | 140 |
Intake valve | 250 | 482 |
Spark plug | 600 | 1,112 |
Exhaust valve | 650 | 1,202 |
Exhaust gases | 450 | 842 |
Piston face | 300 | 572 |
Cylinder wall | 185 | 365 |
Piston ring | 220 | 428 |
Piston skirt | 190 | 374 |
Coolant | 105 | 221 |
Engine oil | 70 | 158 |
What makes deciphering the multitude of temperatures even harder is the quality of the reading often provided from a ~12 infared gun of dubious quality.
